The Goodfellows Club set a fundraising record this holiday season.
The local charity raised more than $138,500, compared to nearly $137,000 last year.
"I'm really humbled by the generosity of this community," said Sally Hager Wood, chairwoman of the Goodfellows board. "We'll use it."
"With the economy and such uncertainty, we were excited to achieve that," Treasurer Barry Carden said.
Owensboro Christian Church was a major contributor to the campaign's success this year, club leaders said. The church donated more than $14,000 from ticket sales for the church's annual Christmas production and the sale of cookbooks compiled by church choir members.
The Goodfellows' annual community Christmas party has been its claim to fame over the last 92 years, but the club also provides coats, shoes and clothing for low-income children and helps with their emergency dental care.
"We continue to try to spread the word we are more than a Christmas party," Carden said.
The club spent about $100,000 helping about 2,000 children in fiscal year 2006-07. By the end of November, the Goodfellows had already spent $80,000 for the current fiscal year, Carden said. That didn't include the Christmas party or needs that will come up between now and June, Carden said.
Donations are accepted all year long. Call the Public Life Foundation at 685-2652. The club also has a new Web site, www.goodfellowsclubofowensboro.com.
