Roll Call recognizes those who support

Two wrongs don't make a right, but two rights -- recognition and support -- make up a big part of Goodfellows.

In the Goodfellows Club Roll Call, donors have the chance to make a donation in the name of someone, in memory of someone, or just in a way that honors someone who has made a difference.

"People look for ways to recognize other individuals who've done things for them. This is one of the unique opportunities that people have to be able to have a public recognition of someone," said Daviess County Commissioner Bruce Kunze, one of the Goodfellows Club board members.

At the same time, it doesn't just give honor or recognition, said Julie Clark of Owensboro. A donation from her sons was given to Goodfellows this year in honor of the staff at her sons' schools, Daviess County High School and Daviess County Middle School, and Boy Scouts Troop 10.

"We just feel like the Goodfellows organization is a good opportunity for us to make a gift that will benefit children in need in the community," Clark said. "We also felt it would be a good way for our boys to show their appreciation."

The best part is that they know it makes a difference and her sons can see that, Clark said.

"We feel like it's a worthy cause. We feel like it helps the boys to be focused on those in the community who may be less fortunate than we are," Clark said. "It makes us feel good to know that we can do things that might help other people to feel good."

On the flip side of the coin, Ellen Higdon's said she's glad for the recognition but even happier to know that her third-grade class made a donation to do good.

"I'm proud that they wanted to (do this). They're really sweet children. They're really giving," said Higdon, who teaches at Highland Elementary. "I'm pleased that they want to do something special for me, and I'm proud that they're doing it this way, helping other children."

Higdon has donated to Goodfellows in honor of her late father and said it's an organization that should be supported, especially because of the work it does.

"I respect it. I, my sisters and brother have made a contribution in memory of my father for two years. It feels good to know that I can help, and it feels good to know that it's helping them (those in need) all year long, not just at Christmas time," Higdon said. "We're living a comfortable life, and we must remember that there are many who aren't. If we can help in some way, we should do that."

Kunze said it's also important enough just to draw attention to Goodfellows because it has such an important role in caring for the community.

"When you really stop and think about it, it just means a lot to this community that so many people are willing to contribute and that they continue to do that year after year after year," Kunze said. "It really has a special place in this community. Hopefully that will continue and Goodfellows will continue to do the good work they do and Goodfellows will continue to enjoy the support of the community."
