About six years ago, Patty Pernisek learned about Goodfellows when her fellow teachers at Daviess County Middle School made contributions to the organization through their "dress down" days.
"I thought it was such a good group that I suggested our National Junior Honor Society hold a Rock-a-Thon and raise money for Goodfellows," said Pernisek, who was the group's sponsor until this year.
The students borrow rocking chairs and solicit pledges for every minute they rock. The chairs are kept busy for about three hours, Pernisek said.
The eighth-graders' efforts from last spring netted a $1,000 contribution to the Goodfellows annual Roll Call.
"We have 60 members this year, so we may raise more," said Pernisek, a language arts teacher.
Students must have a 3.65 grade point average or higher to be a member of the honor society.
Principal Gates Settle said Goodfellows benefits so many schools in so many ways, he's glad the student group is able to make the contribution.
"We do a lot of work at the school to teach kids why it's important to give back to the community," Settle said. "This is another way of teaching community service."
