Estes faculty, staff help cause close to home

The Goodfellows Club has contributed nearly $3,000 to students at Estes Elementary School in the last year for necessities, such as dental care, clothing and shoes.
And teachers at the school wanted to do something to give back.
Last week, faculty and staff of the school raised $320 during a soup day held during their lunch hour.
Diane Meserve, chairwoman for the school's social committee, said everyone brought soup, sandwiches or dessert and donated $3 to eat from the extensive spread.
"Everyone came together and felt good about giving back to an organization that does so much for our kids," she said.
Meserve said the group had a soup day last spring in honor of a teacher who was named teacher of the year. That collection was sent to a Mississippi school affected by Hurricane Katrina, and Meserve said this year they wanted to contribute to an organization closer to home.
"When we give to Goodfellows, we see exactly what we're giving to," Meserve said.
While everyone brought a soup and their recipe to share, Meserve said some of the good cooks used the fundraiser as an opportunity to test out their soups on guinea pigs.
Donations can be made to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42302; or by bringing contributions to the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St.
