"Girls Only" is a sign found on the bedroom door of many a pre-teen's slumber party.

But this week, the sign helped a group of women raise $1,500 for a local agency that provides Christmas to less fortunate children while issuing basic necessities year-round.

For the fourth year in a row, Marianne Smith Edge, Sandy Hallman, Debbie Fillman and Jeanette Medley held a "Girls Only" soup day in Edge's home the Wednesday before Christmas to raise money for the Goodfellows Club.

Edge said the women send e-mails and messages by word of mouth and have had as many as 70 people show up for soup, salad and dessert.

"I think people in Owensboro are always very generous and give to good causes," Edge said. "That is the spirit of the holiday -- to give to those who need it the most."

The Goodfellows Club provides children with essential items such as warm coats and shoes throughout the year in addition to giving hundreds of children toys for Christmas.

For the past several years, Edge said her group has raised about $600 but was extremely excited to reach an all-time high of $1,500 this year.

She attributes the success to the convenience of a soup day allowing people to make a donation without having to mail in or drop off a check.

"It's a good opportunity to catch up as well as provide contribution to a worthwhile cause," Edge said.

Donations can be made to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42302 or by bringing contributions to the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St.

For contributions to be reported in the Christmas Day Roll Call, they must be received at the Messenger-Inquirer before 9 a.m. Monday. Donations are running about $12,000 less than this point last year.

Children and parents needing transportation to the 92nd annual Goodfellows Club Christmas party at the Sportscenter today can take advantage of the Owensboro Transit System's 12 Days of Christmas, a program that provides free fares. The party starts at 9:30 a.m.
