A Dozen Good Reasons
1. It's an adult medium. No seventh grader who can't read likes to be seen carrying around The Little Red Wagon, but he's proud to be seen reading the newspaper.
2. It deals in reality, in what is happening here and now. Motivation for reading and for discussion is built-in.
3. It bridges the gap between the classroom and the "real" world outside.
4. It contains history as it happens, reported as completely and as objectively as humanly possible.
5. It contains something for every student ... the comics, the editorials, the sports, real math problems, and science as it happens.
6. It contains practical vocabulary; the words students will use over and over throughout their lives.
7. It can be marked, cut, pasted, colored etc. -- activities important to students who learn by doing and by seeing.
8. It contains news stories as the models for clear, concise, simple writing.
9. It is the perfect model for teaching students to write for a purpose and for a particular audience.
10. It is the only up-to-date social studies text there is.
11. It is the only text the majority of children will continue to read throughout their lives.
12. It is an influential and integral part of a free society.
Area NIE Facts
With the help of our sponsors the Newspaper in Educaton Program served 220 teachers in the Adopt-A-Class program last school year.
By the end of the year 9,000 students were receiving newspapers each week (not including students and teachers who shared.)
MISSION STATEMENT
We support the use of the newspaper in local schools to expand the curriculum and help bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.
