Our NIE program currently serves 5,000 students in 200 classes in our area schools. NIE strives to make learning more relevant to today's students as they learn to become responsible citizens.

NEWSPAPER IN EDUCATION FACT SHEET

    NIE Services

  • Newspapers are provided to schools at no cost to them.
  • Curriculum guides for all subjects and grades are provided for free download
  • Participating classes are invited to tour the newspaper plant
  • A speakers bureau of newspaper employees provides area schools with educational presentations related to the newspaper
  • The School House News, our NIE newsletter, supplements our curriculum guides and informs teachers of NIE developments and opportunities. Also, NIE teachers receive a weekly e-newsletter.
  • Writing contests are held throughout the school year with winning entries published in the newspaper
  • Special supplements are provided free to participating teachers


    Adopt-a-Class Program (Business and Individuals)

  • All sponsors listed on the Web site
  • Our Adopt-A-Class program provides most of the funding for the program
  • Sponsorship for a class of 25 students for the school year is $175.50. This provides each child with a newspaper each week
  • The teacher, the students, and the principal are informed of the class sponsor, and the students are encouraged to send letters and samples of their NIE work to the sponsor
  • Four half-page color NIE ads appear in the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer each year, listing all of our NIE sponsors and explaining the program
  • All corporate sponsors are listed in our NIE newsletter, which is sent to teachers, sponsors and school administrators each semester
