Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky Distillers' Association, said Friday that people celebrating St. Patrick's Day this weekend can get $20 worth of free ride credits from Safe Ride KY to make sure they get home safely.

The coalition is offering $20,000 worth of Lyft discounts to those who feel they shouldn't be driving after celebrating.

For $20 in free ride credits from Safe Ride KY, enter SAFERIDEKY2019 in the Lyft app for rides through 5 a.m. Monday.

Gregory said people can also use KYDISTILLERS as the code for $5 off their first two "safe rides" anywhere on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, which includes Owensboro.

Safe Ride KY says that since its founding in December 2017, it has delivered 6,591 safe rides over major holidays such as St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The group was launched by the Kentucky Distillers’ Association but has since grown into its own nonprofit organization with sponsors including the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, Becker Law Office, the Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of KY, AAA and Lyft, Gregory said in a news release.

"Our goal is to change behaviors by encouraging people to plan ahead and make safe rides a regular part of their celebrations," he said.

The news release said 24,576 people were convicted of driving under the influence in 2017.

They were involved in 5,350 collisions that killed 154 people and injured 2,781, it said.

Bars and restaurants that would like to sponsor the coalition or help promote the campaign can contact Ali Edelstein at ali@kybourbon.com.

“We’re always looking for new partners to help us grow this important and life-saving effort,” she said in the news release.
