Sorgho Elementary School hosted its first of two potluck days Friday to help raise money for the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro.

The school challenges primary teachers against intermediate teachers for the two potlucks. One hall cooks one week while the other hall pays, and vice versa.

This is the second year the school has held the two potluck days, said Principal Laura Cecil, and it’s a fun way to raise money for a good cause that gets almost all of the staff involved. Teachers work hard to prepare the best food, and both sides make donations for a taste at the feast.

“No one loses this way,” Cecil said.

Students at the school benefit every year from donations to the club, and she said employees are always happy to give back. Last year, Sorgho raised $530 through the teachers vs. teachers potluck event.

“We could have it all on one day, but this way it takes the stress off so many teachers at one time,” she said. “Plus, it’s kind of fun and different to do it this way. We really appreciate Goodfellows for all it does for the students at this school.”

On Wednesday, intermediate teachers in grades three, four and five will take their turn at preparing a meal for teachers who cooked for Friday’s event.

Anyone can be a part of making a child’s life better through the Goodfellows Club. Contributions can be mailed to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, P.O. Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42303.

Donations can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St. People can also contribute online at goofellowsclubofowensboro.org/contribute.
