Hunter Reigler worked for the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer for almost 22 years, and during that time he learned a lot about the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro and its impact on the community.

For at least 15 years, Reigler has been donating at least a couple of hundred dollars each year to the Goodfellows Club. In recent years, he has given $400, and while he wasn’t sure of the exact total of all his donations, hundreds of dollars a year adds up.

Reigler donates to the Goodfellows because he said he knows it’s a legitimate organization that keeps all of the funds local. He likes knowing that 100 percent of the donations go to help area children.

“I think everybody gets a lot of calls from groups asking for money, and you don’t know whether they are legitimate or how much of your money goes to help the cause they are calling about,” he said. “But, I know I can trust Goodfellows, and how they are going to use the money.”

Working at the newspaper — which has been affiliated with the Goodfellows Club for more than 100 years — Reigler said he was able to get to know those people who are integral in the fundraising process and the club’s mission. They are all volunteers, he said, and it isn’t difficult to see their passion for helping children.

Another benefit of Goodfellows is it provides help to families 365 days a year.

Reigler said he hopes his contributions compel others to do the same.

“You always hope these stories help motivate people to give,” he said.

Goodfellows contributions can be mailed to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, P.O. Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42303. Donations can also be drooped off at the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St. People can also contribute online, at
