Daviess County Middle School takes a rather different approach to raising dollars for the Goodfellows Club.

Every spring, the school hosts a students vs. faculty game and asks for donations on entry. The competition is fierce, says event organizer and eighth-grade language arts teacher Lyndsey Kunze, but it’s something almost everyone enjoys.

“The students look forward to this every year,” she said. “It’s kind of become a right-of-passage for our eighth-graders.”

Eighth-grade students who are about to leave for high school apply to be a part of each year’s athletic event, which revolves between basketball, soccer or volleyball. Kunze said she whittles it down to from 16 to 20 students every year and appoints a team captain. The students and faculty get really involved in practices, T-shirt designs, team logos and more. But since the school hosted its first athletic face-off in 2011, the students have never won.

“The teachers usually dominate,” Kunze laughed.

But last school year came down to a volleyball tie. That’s not bad, she said, since many of the teachers on the court are involved in city volleyball leagues.

Students who participate must be in good academic and behavioral standing, and teachers request $1 donations at the door every year. Last year, she said, the school raised more than $600 for a student body of slightly more than 800.

“Not everybody contributes, but we make sure the students understand what it’s for,” she said. “All the classes show Goodfellows videos and we tell them what it’s about. Goodfellows does a lot for our students, and we’re so happy to give back.”

Anyone can be a part of making a child’s life better through the Goodfellows Club. Contributions can be mailed to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, P.O. Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42303. Donations can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St.
