Jennifer Hester has a front-row seat when it comes to seeing the community’s need.

She’s a family resource coordinator at Foust Elementary. The school’s free-and-reduced lunch rate is more than 96 percent, which is a good indicator of the number of students who live at the federal poverty level.

Hester sees kids with holes in their shoes and clothes that don’t fit. Some of them don’t own jackets or warm winter clothing.

For Christmas, many ask for toys and books, but some request clothes. It’s very telling when children ages 5 to 10 ask for clothing as gifts.

Right now, Hester is receiving Christmas requests from 59 Foust families with a total of about 160 kids for the holiday season.

All students at Foust Elementary will be invited to Goodfellows’ Christmas party on Dec. 23 at the Sportscenter, but that party is a small percentage of what the nonprofit provides for needy children in Daviess County all year long.

Goodfellows current budget is $161,625. It will spend $15,000, or nearly 10 percent of its budget, on the Christmas party.  The balance of the nonprofit’s funds go to clothing — except for about 1.5 percent of the budget that helps children with dental needs.

No administrative fees are paid out of the Goodfellows budget. Its all-volunteer board ensures every penny given helps children in need.

“The smile I see on my students’ and parents’ faces when they receive their clothes from Goodfellows is priceless,” Hester said. “I am very appreciative of all that Goodfellows does for our students and their families.”

Some families have commented that Goodfellows’ gift of clothes allowed them to pay bills and put food on the table that month, Hester said. “That’s a big deal. It’s a godsend for my school.”
