If anyone can see the benevolence resulting from the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro, it is school officials or people who work directly with kids every day.

School Family Resource Centers often act as liaisons between families in need and the Goodfellows in order to provide services.

Dave Kirk, spokesman for Owensboro Public Schools, said recently that district employees and staff members do a few fundraisers in an effort to contribute what they can to the cause.

At the central office level, OPS staff members have a soup cook-off where every department provides a soup. When employees go to vote for the best soup, they contribute a dollar, or more. They make it fun by having a competition to see which department makes the “best” soup, and which department can contribute the most money.

Employees of the transportation department are the reining champs, Kirk said.

But they don’t do it for the glory.

Every person involved does it because they enjoy the organization that has been around for more than 100 years, helping the children of Owensboro and Daviess County.

“You’d be hard-pressed to find an organization that helps our students as much as Goodfellows,” Kirk said. “For several of our students, that’s how their Christmas comes every year.”

He said OPS as a staff believes in giving to the organization because they believe in their students, and because of all the students who benefit.

“This is just a cool way for us to give back in our own special way,” he said.

Last year OPS raised more than $1,800 for the Goodfellows Club.

Contributions to the Goodfellows Club can be mailed to: Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, P.O. Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42302. Donations can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St. People can also contribute online at goodfellowsclubofowensboro.org/contribute.
