Cecil, Sorgho Elementary School’s principal, and her staff do their part to donate to the cause by having a staff potluck every year. Sometimes they have more than one, but they always meet at least once, she said.
Staff members and teachers at the school bring various dishes and then each pay in order to partake. All proceeds are donated to the Goodfellows of Owensboro, and usually, Cecil said, they are able to give several hundred dollars.
Goodfellows is a good organization for Owensboro, she said, because all proceeds directly help kids in the area. School Family Resource Centers often act as liaisons between families in need and the Goodfellows in order to provide services.
“We have children who come to school in new clothes thanks to Goodfellows,” she said. “It makes them so proud and happy, and we see that first-hand.”
She and her staff think it’s all about giving back to the community and the students they see every day.
“Sometimes some people in the community don’t see the direct link, but we do,” she said. “It really is a great organization and we are appreciative of it, so this is our way of giving back.”
Contributions to the Goodfellows Club can be mailed to: Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, P.O. Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42303. Donations can also be dropped off at the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St. People can also contribute online at goodfellowsclubofowensboro.org/contribute.
