Payden Sanders and her classmates wanted to develop a fundraiser at Newton Parrish Elementary School for the Goodfellows Club of Owensboro, because they know the importance of the organization.

Payden, 11, is on the Newton Parrish leadership team. The leadership team organizes a fundraiser each year to benefit an area nonprofit, which is typically called Paws for a Cause. This year they’ll be selling snack cakes to students on Wednesday and Thursday. Snack cakes will be for sale for $1 each.

All funds raised will go toward Goodfellows.

“Goodfellows is a big deal, because it helps a lot of students in our school and all over the city and county,” the fifth-grader said. “They help so many people; and this will help them do that.”

Payden said she imagines a parent in need has a lot of joy when their child can be helped through Goodfellows in some capacity, whether they have a need throughout the year or it’s putting a Christmas present under the tree.

“It’s just pretty special,” she said.

Jennifer Pritchett, NPES counselor, said members of the leadership team developed this fundraiser on their own, and they’re very excited about helping other students through the effort.

Newton Parrish staff members donated the snack cakes.

Helping Goodfellows helps so many area children, Pritchett said, which is why the school often hosts some sort of fundraiser to benefit the organization. In the past, they’ve held soup days among staff members and other internal events.

“We feel like giving to Goodfellows is like giving back to our own school community, as well as the community as a whole,” she said.

Contributions to the Goodfellows Club can be mailed to or dropped off at the newspaper office, 1401 Frederica St. Owensboro, Ky, 42301. Donations can also be made online at goodfellowsclubofowensboro.org/contribute. Or, text RollCall to 41444.
