The Goodfellows Club’s 101st annual Christmas party for needy children is over.

The laughter and shouts have faded away.

And the toys are already bringing joy to the children.

But the Goodfellows Club’s work is really just getting started.

The organization buys clothing, shoes and warm coats for children as well as helping them with dental work throughout the year.

For the fiscal year that ended June 30, the club spent $122,232.65 on clothing for the children.

It spent $3,359 on dental care and $105.56 on medical care.

During that year, Goodfellows served 754 children from Daviess County schools and 306 from Owensboro schools.

It spent an average of $103.80 on each county student and $100.14 on each city student.

In 2015, the club helped 936 county students and 471 city students.

The average for that year was $93.91 for county students and $102.23 for city students.

There’s a lot of need out there again this year.

But, as of today, the Goodfellows have collected only $71,168.75.

That’s not quite half of the goal of $155,000.

There’s still time to help.

Donations can be made to Goodfellows Club, Messenger-Inquirer, Box 1480, Owensboro, KY 42302; by bringing contributions to the newspaper office at 1401 Frederica St. or online at goodfellowsclubofowensboro.org/contribute/.
